CHAPTER 9

Harry wanted to go and search the woods for Dwight, but Lacey wouldn’t hear it. Part of her did want his help, but then another large part—the part that resented his affair—did not. Though she hadn’t told him, Lacey was beginning to accept the real possibility that she and Harry would not be together for very much longer. She loved him, true enough, but what sort of example was she setting for their daughter Alice? Surely the young girl had noticed her father sneaking around and taking phone calls in private.

The next morning, after Harry had left for work, Lacey decided she’d go and do a bit of investigating of her own. Once Alice caught the bus to school, she pulled on boots and took a walk out to the barn. Once inside, she rummaged through Dwight’s belongings, looking for any sort of clue regarding his disappearance. Just as Harry and Sheriff Horne had experience before her, she came up empty-handed and began to feel more frustrated than ever.

She began to move beyond Dwight’s things and toward a darker, more obscure area of the barn. There was an old tarpaulin covering something in the corner and—with great anxiety and reluctance—she jerked it free. What she uncovered was several cardboard boxes covered in dust and cobwebs. Lacey curiously moved toward them and used the light on her cell phone to provide enough illumination for inspection. It seemed that there were all sorts of documents that had belonged to the previous owners. There were tax records, pay stubs, and check registers.

Lacey thought it odd that documents with so much personal information would be left inside of a fairly unsecured barn. She was grateful, however, that finally she had names to go with the mystery regarding the disappearance of the previous owners. They were the Billings—Ronald and Sara Billings. She took one of the registers and shoved it into the back pocket of her jeans. She’d come back to it later when she had a chance to dig up some information on the Billings. She rummaged a bit more through the boxes but found nothing else of significance.

Once satisfied that there was nothing more to be explored inside the barn, she ventured outside of it. She began to carefully and meticulously examine the ground for clues. Specifically, she searched for prints. There was no shortage of them to be found, however, there was also no way to differentiate between the prints of Harry, Sheriff Horne, and Dwight. Lacey made her way to the rear of the barn and again there were prints, but the same troublesome quandary remained. Determined to keep looking, she began to move away from the barn and toward the shadows of the looming trees that led into the forest. It was there that things began to get interesting.

There were more prints, but some of the prints, she noticed, looked very much like a human foot. However, the strange thing was that the footprints were nearly two feet in length.
